Psychology plays a crucial role in modern warfare, going beyond traditional combat tactics. Psychological warfare uses insights into human thoughts, emotions, and motivations to shape perceptions, influence behaviour, and achieve strategic goals—affecting individuals, groups, and even entire nations. Hence, arises the need to understand it.

Psychological warfare (PSYWAR) encompasses the calculated use of communications and non-kinetic actions to influence perceptions, attitudes, and behaviours of identified target groups. It operates on the premise that altering the psychological landscape can yield tangible benefits in the military, political, and social domains. Its core objective is to induce favourable conditions while undermining an adversary’s capacity to effectively conduct war operations or maintain social cohesion. Psychological warfare often acts as a force multiplier, amplifying the effectiveness of other military and diplomatic actions.

Objectives of Psychological Warfare
The multifaceted objectives of psychological warfare can be categorized as follows:
A. Morale Manipulation

You might be aware of this weapon system if you have played Metal Gear Solid or you are a part of the Geek Brigade and are neck deep into nerdy stuff like this. But don’t worry if you don’t because I’m here to save you from the dungeons of Ignorance and shall lead you to the light of Knowledge(and maybe even a Mental Asylum, who knows. Just make sure you don’t go all crazy after reading this because at the end of the day it’s not that deep). Enough of the word celling now let’s get straight to business.

BACKGROUND

Suppressors have existed since 1902, but they only gained widespread combat application during World War II. Spymasters of that era introduced a range of suppressed weapons, including unique designs like the Welrod Assassin’s Pistol. In later conflicts, particularly during the Vietnam War, suppressors proved invaluable in modern asymmetric warfare.

Amid the brutal and unforgiving environment of the Vietnam War, early SEAL teams actively sought non-standard firearms to gain tactical advantage. Beyond the conventional, standard-issue military weapons, these elite operatives also employed unconventional options such as Swedish K-guns, commercial shotguns, and modified pistols. One notable example was the Smith & Wesson M39, a compact 9mm semi-automatic handgun originally purchased as a commercial off-the-shelf design. By coupling it with an effective detachable suppressor, the weapon was redesignated as the Mk 22. Its role in quietly neutralizing enemy sentries—and, on occasion, even a yapping stray dog—earned it the enduring nickname “Hush Puppy.”

Some More History

The SEAL teams and MACV-SOG at that time were looking for an extremely silent pistol. These teams were using a variety of handguns at the time, including the old Welrod design from WW2 and a suppressed Walther PPK. But, they wanted something larger, quieter, more powerful, more modern, and easier to aim.

And the monumental job of creating this new weapon fell to the Naval Special Warfare Lab. At the time, SEALs were equipped with the S&W Model 39 pistols, which initially featured a single-stack design for 9mm rounds. However, later iterations were adapted to accommodate a wider grip and a 14-round magazine. The mad scientists at the NSWL then transformed these handguns into the Mk 22 MOD 0. It bears mentioning single stack Mk 22s were rare, with the double-stack variant being more prevalent.

What made it Different?

What makes the Mk 22 MOD 0 so interesting is its pivotal role in shaping the modern suppressed handgun. To achieve this, it dropped the conventional blowback-operated system, like the PPK, and adopted a short recoil-operated mechanism with a locked breech. The S&W Mk 22 is one of the earliest examples of a handgun that utilized a piston or Nielsen Device to allow for reliable cycling when suppressed.

The transformation also affected the barrel—it was lengthened and threaded to securely attach the suppressor. The designers integrated suppressor height sights, which made aiming much easier than with earlier suppressed semi-automatic pistols. Also, a detachable metal stock was added, which helped to increase the accuracy by a great margin.

One more notable feature which sets it apart was the SLIDE LOCK, most guns utilise it to keep the slide open after the magazine has been emptied but the hush puppy used it to keep the slide closed after a shot was fired. Now you may ask how does it make it better? As you probably know, firearms are loud for several reasons: the blast from the muzzle when the round is fired, the sharp crack from a bullet breaking the sound barrier, and the mechanical noise of the action cycling. The last one is often overlooked, but it still contributes to the overall sound. The Mk 22 addressed this by incorporating a slide lock, which prevented the slide from moving and eliminated that mechanical clatter. The trade-off? It turned the pistol into a single-shot weapon, requiring manual cycling between shots.

The Navy outfitted the Hush Puppy with the Mark 3 suppressor—a 5-inch, 8-ounce, wipe-based design. At the time, this type of suppressor was incredibly quiet, so much so that the loudest sound was the slide cycling, which led to the use of a slide lock. However, wipe-based suppressors wore out quickly; the wipes were effective for about 25 shots before performance declined, requiring users to replace the core. Compared to today’s suppressors, which are far more durable and efficient, the Mark 3 was effective but short-lived.

Last but not the Least, the weapon was also issued with 158-grain 9mm ammo. This special, heavy 9mm was subsonic and moved at only 900 feet per second.

It’s Usage & Impact

First-hand accounts of the Mk 22 in combat are rare, but those who used it generally spoke highly of its performance. It stayed in service with SEAL teams well beyond the Vietnam War, suggesting it earned their trust. While exact deployment numbers are unclear, Kevin Dockery’s book “SEALs In Action” notes that SEAL Team 2 alone had 45 Mk 22s in their inventory. In total, around 120 of these pistols were produced, with only two ever leaving military hands for private ownership.

The Mk 22 MOD 0 is a standout among suppressed firearms of its time. While features like the slide lock didn’t catch on widely, elements such as raised sights, threaded barrels, and the integration of a suppressor laid the groundwork for today’s modern suppressed handguns. It was a clever, well-executed solution to a unique problem—and unlike many silenced weapons from the Vietnam era, the Hush Puppy actually worked.

Conclusion

It is known, and almost expected, that people working as diplomats in a foreign country may be spying on that country. But some spies are sent undercover into another country with no diplomatic ties and without permission to be in the country. These agents are called illegals by people working in intelligence

8. Black operations:

Operations untraceable to the sponsor agency; any operation or project that is untraceable due to misrepresentation or disguise so that the originating party remains unknown.

9. Crateology:

A science, originally an art, for judging the contents of crates seen topside on Russian trawlers. A good crateologist can immediately discern a missile, parts or even a fighter being smuggled into a contested area. Developed during the Cuban missile crisis, crateology is now tradecraft.

10. Cross targeting:

A result of intelligence analysis of one country’s activities that produces information about another country’s movements or targets, usually as a result of communication between the two countries.

11. Cut outs:

An individual within an espionage network who enables other officers or agents to remain anonymous; an important element. Often, either a principal or lesser cut out is used, with the principal making hiring and firing decisions and protecting the network leader and the lesser simply acting as an intermediary.

12. Dangle operation:

An operation in which something or someone of interest to an opposition intelligence service is intentionally put into the path of another agent in hopes that he will bite and consequently expose himself or blow his operation.

13. Electronic intelligence (ELINT):

Intelligence derived from the interception and analysis of hostile non-communications emitters such as radar and emitters that are components of navigational systems.

14. False-flag operation:

A project or operation sponsored by one government under the pretence that another government is the sponsor.

15. Host country:

A nation in which representatives or organizations of another state are present because of government invitation or international agreement. The term particularly refers to a nation receiving assistance relevant to its national security.

16. Dead Drop:

A dead drop, also known as a “dead letter box,” is a technique where agents and their handlers leave and pick up documents or other items in a prearranged place for exchange so they do not have to meet each other in person.

The location can be any place where something can be concealed without too much danger of the general public stumbling upon it or seeing the operative make the drop or pickup.

17. Brush Pass:

A brush pass, also known as “brush contact,” is a method of passing information or items while one agent walks past the other. The idea is that the agents will not have a noticeable exchange but look like pedestrians who have just brushed past each other naturally. Unlike the dead drop, the brush pass method will be less conspicuous if it takes place in a crowd. But it also requires some dexterity.

18. Pocket Litter:

Pocket litter is any item an agent carries around to support their cover story and make it believable. It can include business cards or any other paraphernalia related to whatever business they are supposed to be in, receipts of places they are supposed to have gone, and the like.

19. Black Bag Operations:

In a black bag operation, you break into a building to collect intelligence. You might have to pick locks, clone keys, crack safes. Survey and photograph. Plant listening devices. The name comes from the black bags burglars often use to carry their tools.

20. Chicken feed:

Genuine, but not seriously damaging, intelligence knowingly provided to an enemy intelligence agency through an agent or a double agent to establish his bona fides.

Wars can be classified through various lenses, but today we are going to do it from a military POV, which is done by considering two important factors and those are: the use of weapons and the use of resources.

Now let’s take a look at the types:

1. Total War

Total war is a type of warfare that includes the mobilization of all civilian and military resources, infrastructure, and legitimate military targets. It utilizes all societal resources to fight the war and extends hostility to non-combatant areas. The Dictionary definition goes like this: “A war that is unrestricted in terms of weapons used, the territory involved, or the objectives pursued, especially one in which the laws of war are disregarded.”

So, the hypothesis of total war was developed before the invention of nuclear weapons. Before nuclear technology, countries believed they could utilize all means available to win wars. However, they were unaware of the catastrophic power nuclear bombs could unleash. But, after the use of nuclear bombs in 1945 on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, which caused massive casualties of both civilians and military personnel and led to widespread destruction of property, many countries realized the devastating effects of nuclear weapons. They later pledged not to use nuclear weapons in wars.

Sub-types of Total War

a. Total Conventional War: Under this type of war, all types of weapons can be used, except for nuclear weapons.

b. Total Unconventional War: Under this type, nuclear weapons may be used in wars.

Total War Lost Its Totality

It became apparent that what was originally conceived as total war became limited and controlled after nuclear weapons were introduced. Nuclear weapons forced countries to rethink total war strategies due to the extreme risks involved. The basic characteristics were disrupted when the totality of total war was lost. The presence of nuclear weapons limited the use of full-scale conflict, creating an environment of deterrence rather than engagement. Today, nations have agreed not to use nuclear weapons, making total war in the strictest sense unlikely in the future. International treaties, like the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, demonstrate this agreement, making all-out total war less likely.

2. Limited War

Limited war is a type of warfare with specific restrictions. In limited war, countries intentionally limit their goals, use of resources, areas of conflict, and types of weapons. Unlike total war, the objective in a limited war is not the complete destruction of the enemy but rather achieving specific, focused goals that do not require the use of all available resources.

In this type of Warfare:

• Only a portion of the country’s resources is devoted to the war effort.

• Combat is restricted to certain areas or regions, not involving widespread attacks on enemy territory.

• Certain weapons, such as nuclear arms, are avoided.

Key Characteristics of Limited War

A. Carried out by a state that uses less than its total resources. Countries may maintain normal economic and civilian life during the conflict.

B. Has a goal of less than complete defeat of the enemy. The objective may be to gain territory, secure borders, or achieve political influence.

C. Often more practical than total war due to high costs. Limited war allows countries to pursue political goals with controlled expenses.

D. A state’s total survival does not depend on the outcome. Limited wars do not generally pose existential threats to either side.

3. Revolutionary War/Guerrilla Warfare

Revolutionary war is a form of warfare aiming to change the existing power and authority structure, closely tied to the political landscape of a state. In the 20th century, various revolutionary wars occurred, including the Chinese, Russian, and Vietnamese revolutions. These wars were fought against established authorities and governments, with different social classes leading the revolutions in various countries (e.g., workers led in Russia, while farmers led in China and Vietnam).

Guerrilla Warfare: Guerrilla warfare is a form of irregular warfare in which small groups of fighters, such as paramilitary personnel, armed civilians, or irregular forces, use military tactics like ambushes, sabotage, raids, and hit-and-run attacks to combat a larger, less mobile army. Guerrilla groups are a type of violent non-state actor.

Strategy: Guerrilla warfare is a form of asymmetric warfare (competition between opponents of unequal strength). It aims not only to defeat an enemy but also to gain popular support and political influence, thereby magnifying the impact of a small, mobile force against a larger army.

Tactics: Guerrillas usually avoid confrontation with large enemy units but instead target smaller groups of enemy personnel and resources to deplete the opposing force gradually while minimizing their own losses. Guerrilla fighters rely on mobility, secrecy, and surprise, often operating in small units and taking advantage of terrain that is challenging for larger forces to navigate.

“Mao Zedong” summarized the basic guerrilla tactics at the beginning of the Chinese Revolution in 1949: “The enemy advances, we retreat; the enemy camps, we harass; the enemy tires, we attack; the enemy retreats, we pursue.”

Unconventional Methods: Besides traditional military methods, guerrilla fighters may rely on terror tactics, such as using improvised explosive devices (IEDs). They typically depend on organized political support from the local population and are often embedded within it, using the population as a human shield. Many guerrilla movements today also involve children as combatants, scouts, spies, informants, and in other roles.

4. Conventional Warfare

Conventional warfare is conducted using conventional weapons and battlefield tactics between two or more states in open confrontation. The forces on each side are well-defined and fight using weapons that primarily target the opponent’s military. Conventional warfare generally avoids the use of chemical, biological, or nuclear weapons.

Purpose: The primary goal of conventional warfare is to weaken or destroy the opponent’s military, thus preventing their ability to engage in further conventional warfare.

5. Unconventional Warfare

Unconventional warfare is a form of conflict involving the support of a foreign insurgency or resistance against its government or an occupying power. While conventional warfare focuses on reducing the opponent’s military capabilities directly through attacks and manoeuvres, unconventional warfare aims to achieve victory indirectly by using a proxy force.

Distinctions: Unlike conventional warfare, forces in unconventional warfare are often covert or not clearly defined, relying heavily on subversion and guerrilla tactics.

Applications of Unconventional Warfare

A. Overthrow of an existing government or occupying power.

B. Disruption of that power’s operations. .

C. Coercion of that power into specific actions.

6. Specialized Wars

Specialized wars are conflicts fought in challenging terrains such as jungles, mountains, and deserts, requiring special weapons, training, tactics, and strategies.

Types of Specialized Warfare

• Mountain Warfare: Also called alpine warfare, this type involves combat in mountainous or rough terrain, requiring manoeuvring in extreme weather and navigating dangerous landscapes.

• Jungle Warfare: Jungle warfare requires specialized techniques for survival and combat in dense jungle terrain, where visibility and mobility are limited. The thick vegetation, high humidity, and risk of disease pose unique challenges, requiring specific training and equipment for effective operations.

• Desert Warfare: Desert warfare is conducted in arid, open deserts, where extreme temperatures, sandstorms, and a scarcity of water create hostile conditions. The lack of natural cover and open terrain can Favor long-range weaponry, as well as electronic surveillance and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for reconnaissance and attacks.
